First Buddha Beauty store open for business
Cruelty-free favourite, Buddha Beauty, has taken its first step on to the High Street.

Based at The Coach House, 115 Beech Road, Chorlton, the brand's newly-opened store stocks its organic beauty products, as well as offering a full range of holistic therapy treatments.

What's more, you can currently get 3 for 2 on all products in-store.

2014 Freefrom Skin Care Awards open

The third annual Freefrom Skincare Awards opened this year on 13 January.

Run by the team at skincare health site, Skins Matter, the Awards celebrate the best skincare products that are 'free from' allergens and other problematic and undesirable ingredients.

This year there are 12 categories, including new ones for Hard Soaps and Hand, Nail and Foot Care.

The Awards are unique in that they seek out skincare products with strong natural qualities, which are formulated for skin health or suitable for people with skin or other sensitivities and allergies. 

A number of cruelty-free brands were winners in last year's awards - including Neals Yard Remedies, Green People, Fushi, Buddha Beauty and Essential Care - and we're hoping that many more will be added to 2014's honour roll. Watch this space!

Phil Smith Be Gorgeous certified under the Leaping Bunny

Celebrity hairdresser Phil Smith's Be Gorgeous hair care range is the latest brand to be certified under the BUAV's 'Leaping Bunny'.

Products in the range - which is available exclusively at Sainsbury's - are priced from just £3.99, proving that buying cruelty-free doesn't have to cost the earth.

As Katie Swan, Commercial Director at Phil Smith hair care, explains: "At Phil Smith we are 100% against animal testing and cruelty, and we fully support Cruelty Free International (CFI). We know this is a key purchasing factor for many of our consumers, as we are asked daily as to whether the Phil Smith Be Gorgeous brand is cruelty-free. So we are thrilled to have been awarded Leaping Bunny status to certify our commitment to animal welfare. We'll wear the Leaping Bunny logo with pride." 

CFI's CEO, Michelle Thew, added: "I am delighted that the Phil Smith Be Gorgeous range has been certified cruelty-free, meaning that shoppers can buy with confidence and have even more choice available to them on the high street." 

Phil Smith has been hairdressing for over 20 years and owns a chain of salons across the UK and Canada. This success has led to numerous hairdressing awards over the course of his career and he was inducted into the British Hairdressing Hall of Fame in 2000.

India bans animal testing for cosmetics

Humane Society International (HSI) is celebrating after its Be Cruelty-Free campaign has led to India becoming the first country in south Asia to ban animal testing for cosmetics.

The Bureau of Indian Standards has approved the removal of any mention of animal tests from the country's cosmetics standard and the use of modern non-animal alternative tests also becomes mandatory

Speaking on this historic development, HSI's director of research and toxicology, Troy Seidle, said: "India's decision shows the way for all countries that are still undecided about whether to ban cosmetics animal testing. Those countries should take action now, follow India's lead and end cruelty for beauty."

Indian Member of Parliament Baijayant 'Jay' Panda, said: "This is a great day for India and for the thousands of animals who will no longer suffer, yet more work must be done."

With this in mind, the next step for Be Cruelty-Free in India is to achieve a follow-up ban on selling cosmetics newly tested on animals in other parts of the world. A sales ban will prevent companies bypassing the legislation by outsourcing testing to other countries and then importing the animal-tested beauty products back into India for sale.
